During the weekend of 4th – 6th March 8 leaders from the District and 1 County leader attended a Backwoods cooking event at Roughton Mill, North Norfolk.
Before the event started a few of the leaders took the opportunity to abseil down the mill tower, a couple of them in their pyjamas. This was a bitterly cold weekend and even windier up the tower!!
The event started with fire building and lighting…which went quite well, thank god, otherwise we would have starved.
Next came the rabbits. Five were supplied by a local landowner of which we skin, gutted and filleted. One rabbit was placed on a spit and baked over the fire. The fillet’swe put in a pot with potatoes and vegetables and stewed in cider for about 1 1/2 hours. The stew tasted good but the spit roast was a little tough and dry.
We also had Mackerel and Herring to gut and bake in tin foil. These turned out to be very moist and very appetising.
For dessert we made dough bowls which were baked on thick sticks over the embers. These were filled with baked apple and sprinkled with home made sherbet….very nice.
All in all we had a very enjoyable weekend. Our special thanks to great hosts, Tony and John who gave up their weeknd to instruct us.
